HOW TO CONFIGURE PROTONMAIL THUNDERBIRD?

If you are looking for a well-organized email provider/service respecting people’s privacy and data, then ProtonMail should also be considered. In case you wish to integrate your ProtonMail email service with your Thunderbird, then you should know how to configure ProtonMail Thunderbird. To configure ProtonMail in Thunderbird, you must create a ProtonMail account. Then, download and install ProtonMail Bridge on your PC.

Once installed, add your account to ProtonMail Bridge.

ADDING ACCOUNT TO PROTONMAIL BRIDGE

Generally, an email service can be down or temporarily unavailable due to any one of the following reasons:

  • step 1:After installation, launch the app on your computer.
  • step 2:Enter your ProtonMail credentials in the given fields.
  • step 3:Click Sign in.

Now, your account is synced to ProtonMail Bridge. Find the ProtonMail Bridge settings and credentials under the Mailbox details section. Note down those details for later use (these details are required when you configure ProtonMail in Thunderbird).

CONFIGURING MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD

  • Step 1:Launch Thunderbird on your Mac.
  • Step 2:Choose Settings.
  • Step 3:Click the Tools tab.
  • Step 4:Select Account Settings.

  • Step 5:Click Account Actions --> Add Mail Account.
  • Step 6:Enter your name and email address.
  • Step 7:Type your ProtonMail Bridge password that you have noted down earlier.
  • Step 8:Click Done.

The other settings are filled automatically. You can check them by clicking the Manual Config button.

You can also configure manually if you are using a custom domain. You just need to add all the details provided in ProtonMail Bridge (the details you have noted down earlier). So, if you are looking to add it manually, follow these instructions.

  • step 1:After clicking the Add Mail Account option in the previous step, click Manual config.
  • step 2:Input the following details:

Name: Enter your name

Email address: Enter your ProtonMail email address

Incoming server details:

Incoming: IMAP

Server hostname: 127.0.0.1

Port: 1143

SSL: STARTTLS

Authentication: Normal password

Outgoing server details:

Outgoing: SMTP

Server hostname: 127.0.0.1

Port: 1025

SSL: STARTTLS

Authentication: Normal password

Incoming and Outgoing Username: Your ProtonMail email address

Confirm Security Exception
  • step 1:Click Done.
  • step 2:When prompted, confirm the security exception.
  • step 3:Now, Mozilla Thunderbird will fetch your emails

For Mozilla Thunderbird to work correctly, you need to configure some additional settings. Look below for the detailed instructions:

  • step 1:On the Thunderbird settings page, click the Tools tab.
  • step 2:Select Account Settings.
  • step 3:Navigate to Copies & Folders and disable the Place a copy in option.
  • step 4:Scroll down to find the Drafts and Templates option.
  • step 5:Select Local Folders next to “Drafts Folder on.”

Now, you are all set to use Mozilla Thunderbird with ProtonMail Bridge.

Note:

  • step 1:If you see the Send Message Error on your first message, click OK on the pop-up message.
  • step 2:Next Confirm Security Exception for port number 1025.
  • step 3:Try to send your message again. It will reach the recipients successfully.
