In Microsoft Outlook, when you receive an email that contains an attachment, you may get an error message if the attachment is suspected to be a malicious file. The error message is, “Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments”. To know how to open blocked attachments in Outlook, refer to the steps below.
Even though Outlook blocks access to the attachment, it won’t delete the attachment from the email message. The only issue you might have is, you won’t be able to access the attachment. Also, you can't save, erase, open, or print the blocked attachment. However, using one of the methods given below you can access the blocked attachment securely.
If you do not have an FTP site or file share, you can request the sender to compress the attachment using a compression tool. When the attachment is compressed, obviously, its file extension will be changed to .rar or .zip. Outlook doesn't consider these file name extensions as malicious files or threats. Therefore, it won’t block these attachments.
You can download the compressed attachment from your email message and then unzip it using the same compression tool.
Suppose the sender doesn’t have a compression tool, request the sender to rename the filename extension manually. But make sure that the filename extension is not blocked by Outlook. Usually, Outlook blocks the .exe files. So, you can rename .exe files with the .doc extension to avoid the attachment being blocked by Outlook.
When you receive the email, download the attachment and save it on your computer. Then, right-click the attachment file and select the Rename option. Rename the file with its original filename extension to access it. If you still have any queries on how to open blocked attachments in Outlook, click the call button availabel on the screen.
