Microsoft Office 365 allows the administrator to trace the email message as the email passes through the Exchange Online. By tracing the email, you know the email message activity, whether the recipient received or rejected it, or it the delivery is being delayed. You can trace an email in using several methods, read the following steps to know how to trace mail in Office 365 using Security & Compliance Center.

Note: You need to be a registered member of the Organization management, Compliance management, or Help Desk role groups to be able to trace using Security & Compliance Center.

  • Step 1:Open the browser application and visit the official security & compliance website.
  • Step 2:Select the Mail flow tab and choose Message trace.
  • Step 3:Following that, the Message trace page opens up, click the Start a trace button.
  • Step 4:The web page finds all the received and sent emails for the past two days.
  • Step 5:If you do not want to see all the emails of the two days, choose any one query to display the necessary emails.
  • Step 6:You have to create the query list before you can select it for tracing.
  • Step 7:Besides that, you can download the query report in the Downloadable reports section.
  • Step 8:You can use the By these people, and To these people options to set a filter for the senders and recipient list, respectively.
  • Step 9:Select the time range to display the messages within the range by using the Slider or the Custom option.
  • Step 10:Under More search options, you can select the filter options such as Delivered, Pending, Expanded, Failed, Quarantined, Filtered as spam, and Getting status.
  • Step 11:Otherwise, you can filter the emails using the Message-ID, Direction, and Original Client ID.
  • Step 12:After that, select the report type to view the message trace, the report types are Summary and Enhanced Summary.
  • Step 13:Follow the guided instructions to view the message trace and download the reports.
